Stronger Together: Greengates and Microsoft Unite for Special Olympics

Special Olympics

On Saturday, April 5th, Greengates School proudly hosted a Special Olympics event in collaboration with Microsoft, bringing together 26 athletes with learning difficulties, Microsoft employees and their families, and a wonderful team of student volunteers. It was a morning filled with energy, joy, and community spirit, a true celebration of inclusion.

The day began with everyone arriving bright and early, followed by a fun and lively warm-up session that set the tone for what was to come. Athletes were then divided into groups and rotated through a series of track and field events, including sprints, long jump, javelin, and shot put, with students leading each station and cheering the athletes on.

After a well-deserved break, the excitement continued with a friendly 3v3 basketball tournament, where athletes and volunteers came together on the court in a fantastic display of teamwork and enthusiasm. Microsoft staff and families joined in the fun, creating a vibrant and supportive environment throughout the morning.

The student volunteers were outstanding, fully engaged, organised, and compassionate. Many had participated in a pre-event awareness session, where they explored the importance of inclusive language, reflected on the barriers faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities, and learned how to support the athletes with empathy and respect. Their presence and attitude on the day reflected that learning beautifully.

Events like this remind us that people with learning difficulties are not defined by their limitations, but by their strengths, their joy, and their right to be fully included in society. This was more than a sports day, it was a step toward greater awareness, deeper connection, and a shared vision of a world where everyone belongs.

Greengates is proud to have been part of this meaningful initiative and grateful to Microsoft for their partnership in making it happen. We look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.
